The ASU Museum of Anthropology is proud to present the exhibit, Alien Images: UFOs, Photography and Belief, opening March 8, 2007. Through a series of large photographic prints, projections, movies and books, the exhibit will explore the 137 year history of photographic images purported to show Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and the rich variety of interpretations used to explain them.
Since its invention in the mid 19th century, photography has been used to capture evidence of mysterious phenomena, from spirit entities and unusual creatures to strange things in the sky. The images are extraordinary, but the question we each have to ask is this: What are these images evidence of? Over the years, all manner of opaque, glowing, spherical, saucerial, and tubular UFOs have been caught on film. The idea that photographs can exist as documentary evidence of the world has made capturing UFOs an important part of proving their existence. Yet, photographs are not always what they seem. A wide variety of interpretations have arisen to explain UFO images. Skeptical explanations include: fraud, misidentification of natural and man-made phenomena or camera/film/print problems. Other explanations find evidence for otherworldly realities, including: extra-terrestrial craft, secret government technology, angels, inter-dimensional beings, time-travelers and deities.
Join us and see for yourself the many varieties of UFOs captured on film. Spend some time lingering near the photographs, or watch the slideshow and gain insight into the history of this cultural phenomenon. Ponder what these images are evidence of and share your thoughts on the wall of comments.
Don’t forget to come by for one of the many Alien Images Events.
