Three awards of $2000 each for independent student research in the Humanities

Eligibility:

Any advanced ASU undergraduate with at least 60 hours completed at Arizona State University may apply for this independent research award. Student must be in good academic standing, and majoring in a humanities department or program.

The deadline for the Fall 2008 award is Friday, March 28, 2008.

Applications are available here (link to web). For more information, please contact Michele Daley, Manager of Scholarship Administration. E-mail: Michele.Daley@asu.edu.

Application Information for Fall 2008:

This program provides opportunities for undergraduates at ASU who are majoring in one of the Humanities to receive financial support for innovative, independent research. The eligible Humanities Programs are: English, Languages and Literatures, History, Film & Media Studies, Philosophy, and Religious Studies.

Program Objectives:

  • Enhancing the overall quality of undergraduate education in the Humanities
  • Preparing students for graduate studies or research careers
  • Attracting excellent students to the Humanities.

Students' Responsibilities:

Students must be advanced ASU undergraduates (at least 60 hours completed with l5 at ASU), majoring in a humanities department, and in good academic standing. Each student will enroll in a 499 course in the major (not honors thesis or other required courses, although the 499 may be a springboard to these courses) and will work closely with a faculty advisor on an original project approved by the advisor. Students will produce a written paper or the equivalent, to be approved by the advisor, and will be encouraged to present the research results in a public forum. Each student is eligible for no more than one award.

Faculty Advisors' Responsibilities:

As part of the student's application, a faculty advisor will write a letter of support to the Award Selection Committee about the project. In that letter, the faculty member discusses the merit and importance of the proposed project and agrees to oversee the project. The faculty member also agrees to certify at midterm that satisfactory progress is being made. During the project, the advisor agrees to meet regularly with student, to help produce a work plan and a timetable, and to provide guidance to the student throughout the project.

Selection Criteria:

The quality of the proposal, its originality, and the likelihood that the project can be completed in one semester will constitute the primary basis for selection. Student is advised to select a reasonable, well-defined project than to tackle the great riddles of the universe. The Award Selection Committee encourages projects that can be carried out in the context of a regularly scheduled class.

Awards will be announced by June 1, 2008.
