Assistant Professor of Islam
Tenure Track

The Department of Religious Studies invites applications for a position in the study of Islam at the rank of a tenure-track assistant professor.  Although the primary area of expertise may be in any historical period, the successful candidate will be able to teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in Islam in historical perspective, conduct research leading to scholarly publications and provide service to the department, university, and profession.

Required:  PhD in Religious Studies or a related field by time of appointment; demonstrated experience using a major Islamic language; record of research and publication as well as teaching experience, appropriate to development since time of doctorate.

Desired:  Research examining Islam in a global context; research interests in Islamic law or politics or the ethnographic study of Muslim culture; research addressing the particular features of social conflicts in Islamic history, the general intellectual frameworks developed to interpret and evaluate them, and their relevance to contemporary developments; demonstrated ability to teach theoretical and thematic courses in the study of religion; and the ability to employ classical Arabic sources in teaching and research.
