Interested in Contemporary Islam and Muslim Societies around the world?

Undergraduates at Arizona State University can sign up for the Islamic Studies Certificate Program and can earn both a certificate and transcript recognition indicating their academic focus on Islam and the Muslim World. The Certificate Program is a distinct advantage for students interested in any academic discipline with a world-wide focus, including professional programs in Social Work, Global Studies, International Law and Business. Students interested in Religious Studies, Anthropology, Arabic, Political Science, Geography, History, Anthropology and other disciplines will find the certificate important for deepening their knowledge about Islam and Muslims in the contemporary world.

All ASU students in undergraduate degree programs are eligible for the Islamic Studies Certificate Program. Students who complete all the requirements of a) their major; b) their College; and c) the certificate program will receive a certificate plus transcript recognition of their particular emphasis.

Certificate Requirements:

Students must complete a minimum total of 26 semester hours, chosen in consultation with the Islamic Studies program coordinator.  12 of these must be upper-division hours. A minimum grade of "C" is required in each course.


Requirements:

1. Language (8 hours)

Students must complete 8 hours of Arabic, Indonesian or another language approved by the program coordinator. Students who are native speakers of these languages or who have equivalent knowledge will substitute 2 additional courses approved by the program coordinator.

2. Coursework (18 hours total):

A. Core Courses (12 hours)
    Students must complete REL 260, REL 365, REL 366 and either a relevant section of REL 394
    or REL 460.

REL 260   Introduction to Islam
REL 365   Islamic Civilization
REL 366   Islam in the Modern World
REL 394   OR  REL 460.  Topics vary.

B. Electives (6 hours):

Students must choose any two courses (6 hours) from a list of approved electives. Please see the ELECTIVES section in the list below.
