Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards

The Psychology Department has several annual awards that recognize outstanding achievements of its undergraduate majors. These awards are based on faculty nominations in the early Spring semester (February). Awardees are generally announced in April and the awards are given for the following Fall semester.

If you are interested in any of these scholarships, please contact a faculty member.

Outstanding Undergraduate Research Paper

This award is traditionally given to the best Honors Thesis from the Honors Sequence from the prior year. It is judged based on the final thesis document and reflects overall quality of the research project as reflected in the thesis.

Ernest Lindholm Award for Outstanding Senior in Biopsychology.
This award was established in memory of Ernie Lindholm, a longtime faculty member of our Department. The award honors the senior psychology major with interests in Biopsychology (broadly conceived), based on scholarship and research attainment as an undergraduate, and potential to make continuing contributions to understanding biological influences on behavior and/or health.

Phil Mickelson Award for Excellence in Psychology

This award is given to an outstanding undergraduate psychology major, based on achievement as a undergraduate psychology major. This award is made in the fall of the student’s senior year, with the winner selected in the spring semester.
The award was established by Phil Mickelson, who was an ASU psychology major (BA, 1992) as well as an outstanding student-athlete, and is a top PGA player. The award was endowed in honor of the former Dean, Gary Krahenbuhl.

The Dariel Overby Memorial Scholarship Award

This annual award is made to an outstanding student in memory of Dariel “Rusty” Overby. Rusty was an undergraduate Psychology major whose life was ended tragically by acts of random gunfire. This award is open to all undergraduate psychology majors, with consideration given to academic record, leadership, and financial need, with a preference given to returning students.

The Zita M. Johnson Child Study Scholarship

This annual award goes to an undergraduate psychology major pursuing studies leading to a career serving young children and their families. The $1000 award is intended to support the academic progress at ASU of a student who has demonstrated an interest in child psychology, early intervention, child care, family counseling, social services for children and families, applied child development research, or social policy. This scholarship award was endowed in honor of Zita Johnson, who was the Director of the Psychology Department’s Child Study Laboratory, and who has long dedicated herself to service of others in the best interest of children and families, as a professional and civic leader.

Dean’s Circle Psychology Department Scholarship (3 awards of $1000)

This award is given to three outstanding Psychology majors who will be continuing in the Fall. The award is based on academic record of achievement as a psychology major in classroom and research and promise for continuing contributions to the field. Download the application here(PDF)
