Educational Psychology offers a Master of Education degree for persons who wish to further prepare themselves as classroom teachers or other positions related to instruction. Students completing this program are not expected to continue for a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. The program focus is on the whole of human development from differing theoretical perspectives. Graduates are prepared for academic positions as well as administrative roles. Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Learning Offered by the Division of Psychology in Education in the College of Education Learning is a concentration in Educational Psychology offering both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The primary focus of the program is on theoretical and applied research in human learning. As a general rule, graduates of the M.A. program continue on for study toward the Ph.D. degree. Graduate students are expected to develop competencies in research methods and in theoretical orientations relevant to their area of study. The Department of Family and Human Development offers a degree program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree with a major in Family Science. The Ph.D. in Family Science degree prepares researchers with a focus on family processes, family relationships, and infant, child, and adolescent development. The Ph.D. program is designed for graduates to assume leadership roles as researchers and academicians in universities, or as directors in public or privately funded mental health agencies, industry, or government. This is a research-based degree. A thesis and a dissertation are required. The Master of Arts in Sport-Exercise Psychology (MA) program is designed to educate and train students to function as capable and ethical performance enhancement specialists. The two-year degree is intended to meet the needs of students seeking employment in a variety of settings, including private practice, athletic departments, coaching, exercise/health, and education, or those who will ultimately pursue their doctorate. Graduates may be employed in a variety of settings including school districts, agencies, hospitals, independent practice and university training programs. Argosy University/Phoenix offers a practitioner-scholar model of training in school psychology. The school psychology program emphasizes study in ethics, child and adolescent development and psychopathology, special education, psychological assessment, therapeutic techniques as well as other psychological interventions including consultation to the educational system. Courses are taught by doctoral level professors who are school certified and/or licensed psychologists. The program is designed to be completed in 4 1/2 - 5 years and includes two years of practica and a year of internship. Class times vary with courses being taught in the late afternoon, early evening and during the day. Preparations are underway for initiating Saturday classes. Practica and internships are available in local public and private schools, as well as other settings, under the supervision of licensed psychologists. Students study the issues and problems for which sport psychology services are typically utilized and develop skills to effectively intervene in sport settings. In addition, students learn how to function as ethical sport psychologists who are capable of providing performance enhancement and psychological services in sport settings. Graduates of the PsyD in Clinical Psychology program with a concentration in Sport-Exercise Psychology are eligible to apply for status as a Certified Consultant, AAASP in addition to licensure as a Psychologist in Arizona and most other states. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Professional Counseling Offered by Ottawa University The Master of Arts in Professional Counseling degree is an applied degree utilizing theories and research from counseling psychology to prepare professional counselors. The programs are designed to fulfill the educational requirements established by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners for Certification in Professional Counseling. Programs can be designed for certification in Marriage & Family Therapy and other fields. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Human Resources-Substance Abuse Counseling Offered by Ottawa University Ottawa University’s MAHR-Substance Abuse Counseling degree program prepares graduates to perform as highly qualified, licensed professionals (see below for Arizona regulations) in the area of substance abuse and addictions.
