Ross Rice Scholarship

The family of Ross Rice established an award in his honor. Ross was the founding member of the Department of Political Science, which at one time was part of ASU’s Department of History. Ross was for a long time the curator of the Carl Hayden papers in ASU’s Hayden Library, and just prior to Ross’s retirement, he completed an extensive biography of Carl Hayden, Arizona’s first U.S. congressman and first U.S. senator.

Minimum Criteria:

  1. Each year, the Ross Rice Award shall be presented to the outstanding political science undergraduate who best combines academic excellence and outstanding service.
  2. Award recipients shall be undergraduate students pursuing a major in the Department of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe campus.
  3. Award recipients shall be full-time students who are enrolled in at least 12 semester hours per semester; the only exception to this requirement shall be for a graduating senior who needs fewer than 12 semester hours to graduate.
  4. The first Ross Rice Award was given in 1987. The first award using the amount available for spending from the endowment will be made in 2006-07.
  5. Initially, the Donor expects the amount available for spending to support one scholarship per year with an award of approximately $250 to $500.
  6. The Donor understands that over time the number of awards and the amount of each award may vary, at the discretion of the ASU Beneficiary.
  7. This award may be renewed, at the discretion of the Selection Committee in the Department of Political Science, ASU Tempe campus.
  8. Financial need is not a factor in awarding this scholarship.
  9. Award recipients shall have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 and a political science GPA of 3.5.
  10. For the purposes of this award, “service” (as mentioned in #1 above) may include, but is not limited to, community service, volunteer work and involvement in campus or departmental organizations.

Selection Process:

  • The Department of Political Science is responsible for the selection of the annual Ross Rice Award recipient. Nominations shall be submitted by political science faculty, and the Scholarship Committee of the Department of Political Science will select one to two students who best exemplify academic excellence and outstanding service.

Nominations shall be submitted to Director of Undergraduate Studies by February 25, 2009.
