Herman R. Frazier Political Science Scholarship

Description:

The Department of Political Sciences awarded the first Herman R. Frazier Scholarship in fall 2002. The scholarship is given to a deserving political science student each year. Students are invited to apply by completing the application and writing a brief essay on the relationship between government and/or politics and sports. The scholarship is funded through generous donations from the colleagues and friends of Herman R. Frazier, a 1977 graduate of ASU with a B.S. in political science.

Herman Frazier’s most recent honor - a first for an ASU graduate - was his selection as a recipient of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, presented to him on Sunday, January 13, 2002, at the NCAA Honors Dinner in Indianapolis. The NCAA Silver Anniversary Awards are presented each year to six former student-athletes who have made significant professional and civic contributions since completing their intercollegiate eligibility 25 years ago.

Herman Frazier is a talented and accomplished administrator as well as a world-class collegiate and Olympic athlete. Throughout his career Mr. Frazier has made a significant difference on the national sports scene. He is currently the director of athletics at the University of Hawaii. He represented the United States Olympic Committee as chef de mission of the Athens games in summer 2004. As a track and field student-athlete, Mr. Frazier led ASU to the 1977 NCAA title. He won a gold medal in the 4x400 meter relay and a bronze medal in the 400 meters at the 1976 Olympics. During a 21-year career at ASU (1979-2000), Mr. Frazier held a number of positions in the Intercollegiate Athletics Department, and was a senior associate athletics director at ASU. To celebrate and honor Mr. Frazier’s lifetime achievements, his friends and colleagues initiated the Herman R. Frazier Scholarship in ASU’s Department of Political Science.
