Goals and Objectives of the Program
The ASU Capital Scholars program develops future leaders by providing undergraduate students with hands-on training in the public policymaking process in Washington, D.C., while it enhances the university's and the state's reputation in the nation's capital. Each year since 1998, ASU has provided an opportunity for up to 25 undergraduate students to spend a summer in Washington, D.C., interning with Congress, federal agencies, advocacy groups, the media, nonprofit organizations, think tanks and policy research groups. The interns also participate in activities organized just for them, including tours of Annapolis, the State Department and the CIA; career panels; cultural events and lectures. The Capital Scholars end their stay in Washington with a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to honor Arizonans who have died in service to their country.
The primary goal of the Capital Scholars program is to help students develop leadership skills that will enable them to be successful in their career, active in the community and involved in policymaking. By supplying the Washington policy community with a reliable and consistent source of bright, hard-working interns, ASU and the state of Arizona benefit, too. Students are selected for the program following a rigorous application process. Successful applicants are serious students with an interest in public policy, a strong work ethic and a passion for new ideas and experiences.
