He has been a member of the department since 1990, received his BA from Fordham University and MA and PhD from Indiana University. The author of book chapters and articles on race and ethnicity, he has contributed articles to Comparative Politics, Afro-Diaspora, Centennial Review, Social Forces and Law and Society Review. Professor Mitchell's teaching and research focuses on democratization in Latin America and the politics of ethnic minorities.
