    He joined the department in 1981. He received his B.A. from University of California, Santa Barbara, and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977. Professor Ashley is the author of The Political Economy of War and Peace: the Sino-Soviet-American Triangle and the Modern Security Problematique (1981) and has contributed articles to International Studies Quarterly, Alternatives, International Organization, Public Opinion Quarterly, Millennium: Journal of International Studies, and Journal of International Studies. Professor Ashley was the 1985 recipient of the Carl Deutsch Award of the International Studies Association. His current teaching and research interests involve the the exploration of various critical approaches to the analysis of international organization and international political economy, with special attention to questions of sovereignty and power.
