- He became a member of the department in 1988. He received his BA from Tufts University, his Ed.M from Harvard University, and his D.Phil. from Oxford University. Professor Crittenden is the author of Beyond Individualism: Reconstituting the Liberal Self (1992) and of Democracy’s Midwife: An Education in Deliberation (2002). He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, as well as a Spencer Post-Doctoral Fellowship. His teaching and research interests focus on political theory and the conceptions of the self. His recent research has focused on civic education, deliberative democracy, and cosmopolitan identity. Currently he is working on two books, one on cosmopolitan identity and global democracy and the other on direct deliberative democracy. He continues to be skeptical of most things, including the value of biographies like this one.
