The Political Science Department at ASU offers B.A., B.S., and five-year Joint Bachelor/Master’s Programs, as well as M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. It enrolls over 1,400 undergraduate majors and approximately 50 graduate students in various programs of study. Over 60 undergraduate courses and a variety of graduate courses are offered to prepare students for responsibilities as citizens, leaders, and professional political scientists in a democratic society and an interdependent world.
The department provides internship opportunities for students to participate in state and local government, voluntary organizations, and a summer internship program in Washington, D.C. The department sponsors several scholarships for outstanding undergraduate achievement in political science. ASU political science graduates regularly receive graduate scholarships and fellowships, and have achieved success in a variety of careers, including the federal government, state and local government, law, journalism, education, and the business world.
The five major areas of study are: American politics, public policy, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. The faculty are diverse, representing a variety of specialties and points of view within political science and other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, history, anthropology, and economics. The richness of the faculty's diversity, background, and training contributes to an exciting teaching and learning environment, making political science one of the most popular majors at ASU.
