The University of New Brunswick Exchange with ASU

The University of New Brunswick is planning an exchange with Arizona State University that will see one graduate student from UNB visit ASU in the winter, and one graduate student from ASU visit UNB in the fall. UNB offers one of the finest creative writing programs in Canada, and approximately half of its MA students publish their theses as books. ASU students will have the opportunity to work with faculty and fellow students both in workshops and one on one.  We have a full-year writer-in-residence available to ASU students.

The University of New Brunswick is in Fredericton, New Brunswick, nestled in the Saint John River valley in Atlantic Canada.  Fall in New Brunswick is the classic New England autumn: the spectacular colors of the leaves, the fall harvest at the outdoor Farmers' Market, the magnificent biking and hiking trails, and the boardwalk across the river.  The Celtic culture and the pub life, too, are special.

UNB houses the most prestigious journal in Canada, the internationally renowned The Fiddlehead, and ASU students will have the chance to work on editing the journal. There is also the nationally respected graduate creative writing journal Qwerty. There is a fine public reading series that presents approximately ten authors each fall and students have numerous chances to read publicly from their own work.  Each fall we host The Poetry Weekend, which sees thirty to thirty-five poets gather to read and discuss each other's work, and all students read at this festival; even ASU fiction writers will be included! The UNB program is small, cozy and highly professional.  ASU students will find that visiting UNB for a semester is a memorable experience.
