Major
in Philosophy
The major in Philosophy
consists of 45 semester hours, 33 of which must be upper-division hours.
In exceptional cases, up to nine units may be in related fields as approved
by the undergraduate advisor.
Required courses
are as follows:
- PHI 300* - Philosophical
Argument & Exposition
- PHI 301 - History
of Ancient Philosophy
- PHI 302 - History
of Modern Philosophy
- PHI 305 (or 335)
- Ethical Theory
(or History of Ethics)
- PHI 312 (or 314)
- Theory of Knowledge
(or Philosophy of Science)
- PHI 316 (or 317)
- Metaphysics
(or Philosophy of Mind)
- PHI 333* - Introduction
to Symbolic Logic
*NOTE: Philosophy majors should
take PHI 300 as one of their first upper-division philosophy courses
and they should take PHI 333 in their junior years or earlier. Please
be advised that these courses may not be offered every semester.
Also required
are at least two of the following courses:
- PHI 401
- PHI 402
- PHI 403
- PHI 413
- PHI 420
(which may be taken for credit more than once)
A minimum grade of
"C" is necessary for each course used to fulfill the major requirements.
Students planning to do graduate work in philosophy should consult an
advisor in order to develop an appropriate selection of courses at the
300 and 400 levels.
