About:

Kristinn Heinrichs, is a board-certified physical therapist and certified athletic trainer with more than 27 years’ clinical experience in sports and orthopedic human performance and rehabilitation working with recreational to elite level athletes from collegiate to international levels of Olympic competition. Dr. Heinrichs’ sports medicine experiences range from youth sports, recreational athletes, NCAA Division I athletics, international competitions, and Olympic Games. Her approach to functional orthopedic and sports rehabilitation and performance conditioning is a unique and eclectic one, encompassing clinical biomechanics, exercise physiology, conditioning for performance, injury prevention, and orthopedic rehabilitation.   Dr. Heinrichs has conducted research-based orthopedic and sports medicine workshops in several languages at national and international levels, including Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. In the newly emerging field of animal rehabilitation, Dr. Heinrichs has presented seminars and lectures to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and physical therapists on the area of neuromusculoskeletal rehabilitation of the injured horse.  Dr. Heinrichs is an alumnae of the University of Virginia (PhD in Education (sports medicine) and MEd (exercise physiology) and Marquette University (BS in Physical Therapy). While at the University of Virginia, she was elected to the Raven Honor Society.

Research:

Dr. Heinrichs’ interests focus on evidence-based practice, curriculum development and the scholarship of teaching (including teaching and technology issues, classroom assessment of student learning, problem-based learning, critical thinking, and the humanities in science and medical education).  Prior to coming to ASU, Dr. Heinrichs led the development of the first entry-level masters’ degree problem-based learning athletic training curriculum.  She was invited to participate in the University System of Georgia Chancellor’s Symposia on Excellence in Teaching and Learning and, as a result, collaborated with faculty colleagues in the humanities, to develop faculty teaching assessment methods used on a university-wide basis.  Dr. Heinrichs’ clinical orthopedic research interests are in the area of the rehabilitation of osteochondral defects and the role of neuromuscular fatigue in proprioception and injury.

Courses and
Selected
Publications:

Dr. Heinrichs teaches the core curriculum courses of Functional Anatomy and Kinesiology (KIN 334); Biomechanics (KIN 335); Motor Development, Control, & Learning (KIN 345); Biomechanics of the Musculoskeletal System (KIN 412/512); Research Methods (KIN 494); and Argentina:  Social, Cultural, and Political Perspectives on Health Care Delivery (KIN 494).  She has received the 2006 and 2007 award for “most inspirational faculty member” and was nominated for the 2007 Distinguished Teaching Award in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Dr. Heinrichs has long been committed to international education as a means to integrate the humanities with the scientific practices in her discipline; her gift for language (fluent in German, Italian, and conversational in Spanish) led her to create and direct study programs in Italy and Argentina, and to negotiate an exchange agreement with the Sport Science Research Institute at Otto von Guericke University in Germany.  Outstanding undergraduate students have advanced study and mentorship opportunities for service learning with the Malawai Project (developing rehabilitation devices for people with disabilities in cooperation with the Department of Bioengineering) and other opportunities to learn about, and practice, the scholarship of teaching in the areas of biomechanics, anatomy, and motor development and control.  Dr. Heinrichs serves on undergraduate Honors’, masters’ and doctoral student research committees.
