Welcome to the Institute for Humanities Research
“The challenges of the world make the humanities as important, if not more important, than they’ve ever been.” --John Hennessy, President of Stanford University, 2007
The role of the Institute for Humanities Research in the New American University is to advance the humanities as a site of vital research that contributes to productive social dialogue and makes a difference in the world. The IHR generates and supports transformative, transdisciplinary, collaborative humanities scholarship that addresses compelling social issues linking the past, present, and future.
Many things make humanities research socially relevant. The IHR is dedicated to exploring and promoting humanities scholarship that addresses public concerns. We provide an engaging intellectual climate in which humanistic knowledge, methodologies, and skills are central to the analysis and resolution of the world’s many challenges. I am pleased to be a part of the IHR, and I invite your participation. I hope you will explore the IHR site further to find out who and what we are, what’s new, how to apply for funding for research clusters, seed grants, ASU fellowships, and Visiting fellowships. Put our events on your calendar. Check out relevant links and resources. Find out about our Distinguished Lecturer for 2008, Professor Michael Berube of Penn State University. Read related announcements. In short, share in the exciting intellectual world of the IHR.
