Vision

The Center for Film, Media and Popular Culture at Arizona State University seeks to become a nationally and internationally prominent research environment. Its primary commitment is to creating and sustaining innovative activities reflecting the significant cultural, social, and economic role film and media play in shaping new millennium human values and global communities.

Mission

Our mission is fivefold.

  1. We support innovative and entrepreneurial-driven research projects focused on the cultural, political, aesthetic, educational, global and technological aspects of film and new media.
  2. Given that film and media studies and film production on the Arizona State University are highly transdisciplinary and are located across many departments within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Herberger College of the Arts, we will supply a central film and media culture space to bring faculty together for the purposes of collaborating on research and pedagogical projects.
  3. We serve the community with outreach projects such as film series organized around timely topics introduced by faculty followed by discussions led by faculty.
  4. We build connections with the entertainment industry by maintaining an active industry advisory board and with the position of Distinguished Fellow in Film Writing, Directing, and Producing.
  5. We sponsor special projects such as conferences and festivals on the Arizona State University campus and in the community.

Research Expectations

Active grant seeking and corporate partnership agendas will result in projects having transcultural, transnational, and transdisciplinary interests. Faculty from a wide variety of disciplines (e.g., Art and Architecture, Anthropology, Languages and Literatures, English, Theatre and Film, History, Music, Philosophy, Women's Studies, and the sciences) will be invited to participate in project development and activities.
