Professor Bernardi's research explores the representation and narration of race in American film, theory and practice of new media, and media literacy/distance learning. He also worked in the entertainment industry as both a producer and screenwriter, and continues to consult and work on specific film and television projects. His publications include: Star Trek & History: Race-ing Toward a White Future (New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 1998), The Persistence of Whiteness: Race and Contemporary Hollywood Cinema (London: Routledge, 2008), Classic Hollywood/Classic Whiteness (Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 2001), and The Birth of Whiteness: Race & the Emergence of U.S. Cinema. (New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press. 1998).
