Cesar Chavez was born in March 31, 1927, on his grandfather's small farm near Yuma, Arizona. At the young age of ten he became a migrant farm worker. In time he became interested in creating better working conditions for farm workers. In 1962 Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association, the forerunner of the United Farm Workers Union associated with the AFL/CIO. Chavez died April 23,1993. During his leadership and non-violent strategies, Chavez fasted at different times to bring about important resolutions. In 1968, he fasted for 25 days because his heart was filled with grief over the pain and suffering of the farm workers. In 1972, he fasted for 24 days in opposition to a right-to-work law, and in 1988 he fast lasted for 36 days to protest the use of pesticides on California table grapes.
