Cesar Chavez had once expressed a desire for time in his busy life to read fine books, perhaps the classics. His commitment to organize agricultural workers so they could gain increased wages, safety in the work place, health benefits, and imprvoved housing and living conditions for their families left little time for him to read at leisure. However, his work made it possible for younger generations to enjoy a better life, to attend school and earn degrees and to live a productive life. In time Arizona State University honored Cesar Chavez with an honorary doctorate degree in the humanities.
