Connecting with Seniors Helps Valley Students Learn American History

Although visiting a senior community might not be what some eighth graders would consider an exciting destination for a field trip, the students in Joan Miller’s social studies class at West Wing School certainly did. When the bus came to a stop outside the Royal Oaks Lifecare Community in Sun City, the students disembarked full of enthusiasm to begin interviewing residents for their oral history class project. Miller, with guidance from Arizona State University’s Department of History, designed the project so that her students could learn about the era that spans from the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 to the present day from individuals who experienced it first-hand.  More information...


ASU Wins College Bowl Regional Tourney

ASU-YORK Environmental History Exchange

ASU and York team teach in environmental history. York's Y-File had the following to say:

In Memory

Associate professor of history Christiane Harzig passed away Nov. 6 after a struggle with cancer. Harzig came to ASU in 2006, becoming part of a community of scholars whom she inspired to greater collegiality and common purpose. Her passing has been a great and personal loss to the university. History Professor Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

The History Department is pleased to congratulate professor Donald Fixico, who was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Western History Association Conference, convened in Oklahoma City.


Recent Ph.D. Graduate Wins Dissertation Prize

Laura Munoz, who earned her Ph.D. from the history department in 2006, with co-chairs Vicki Ruiz and Gayle Gullett, won the 2007 Claude A. Eggertsen Dissertation Prize from the History of Education Society for her dissertation, "Desert Dreams: Mexican American Education in Arizona, 1870-1930."


Graduate Student Honored by Congressman

Dana Bennett, a graduate student in the Ph.D. in Public History Program was honored recently by Nevada's Congressional delegation for her Midas book. Congressman Porter's transcription can be read in the Congressional Records.

Frontiers is one of the oldest and most respected academic feminist journals in the United States. Founded in 1975, it is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary journal of scholarship, creative work, and personal essays.
