Cultural Heritage and Education Institute -- Purpose is to save and share Athabascan culture and skills.

 

Tlingit National Anthem, Alaska Natives Online -- Alaska Native and American Indian history, art, celebrities, culture, dance, storytelling, photographs, music, and languages.

 

University of Alaska Museum -- Exhibits on five regions in Alaska including information on Alaskan Natives.

 

Arizona:

 

Amerind Foundation Museum, Dragoon -- Dedicated to study and interpretation of Native American cultures.

 

Deer Valley Rock Art Center -- An outdoor exhibit of the rock art in Deer Valley, Arizona.

 

Heard Museum, Phoenix -- Specializes in Native American art and culture.

 

Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff -- Exhibits and special events focusing on Native American, Hispanic, and Western artistic traditions.

 

Smoki Museum, Prescott -- Arizona's Treasury of Native American Artifacts – Dedicated to the preservation of Native American artifacts.

Museum of Prehistory and History, Arkansas Tech University -- Focuses primarily on Native American heritage of the area.

 

California:

 

Antelope Valley Indian Museum -- Represents Indian cultures of the western Great Basin near the Sierra Nevada Mountains in southern California.

 

Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Los Angeles -- One of seven main exhibits is dedicated to Native American artifacts.

 

California Indian Museum and Cultural Center -- A facility that portrays California American Indian history and culture from the native perspectives.

 

Catalina Island Museum -- Records and artifacts covering 7,000 years of the history of Catalina Island including specific information on the Native American inhabitants.

 

Riverside Municipal Museum Online Exhibitions -- Including exhibits on Plateau Indians and their manufacturing techniques of baskets, bags and doll cradles.

 

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History -- Contains an exhibit on the Chumash Indians of California.

Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, Cortez -- Dedicated to involving the public in the study of archaeology and Native American cultures of the Southwest in a living museum.

 

Koshare Indian Museum, La Junta -- Preserves and interprets Southwest and Plains Indians' artifacts and tribal art.

 

Connecticut:

 

Connecticut Museum of Natural History -- Maintains permanent exhibit on Native American life.

 

Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, Mashantucket -- Dedicated to the histories and cultures of Native North Americans.

 

Somers Mountain Museum of Natural History and Primitive Technology, Somers -- Exhibits on Native American history, culture, and technology.

 

District of Columbia:

 

National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian Institution -- “Helping to foster, protect, and promote understanding of Native American cultures by collaborating with indigenous peoples across the Western Hemisphere.”

 

U.S. Department of the Interior Museum -- Includes exhibits on Native American tribes.

 

Florida:

 

Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, Seminole Tribe of Florida -- Museum dedicated to presenting the life and culture of the Seminole tribe.

 

Georgia:

 

Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University, Atlanta -- Permanent exhibit on “Art of the Ancient Americas” and occasional special exhibits on American Indian subjects.

 

Museum of Aviation, Robins AFB -- Includes an exhibit of Native American Culture featuring artifacts discovered on Robins Air Force Base dating back 8,000 years.

 

Hawaii:

 

Bishop Museum, Honolulu -- Houses Hawaiian artifacts and the royal family heirlooms of the last descendant of the Royal Kamehameha family, Princess Bernice, Pauahi Bishop.

 

Polynesian Cultural Center, Brigham Young University of Hawaii -- Preserves and showcases Polynesian culture, arts, and crafts.

 

Indiana:

 

Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis -- Collections include basketry, pottery, sculpture and other artifacts from ten native cultural zones.

 

Mathers Museum of World Culture, Indiana University -- Exhibits a special collection on Native North Americans. Also features exhibits on music, technology, and dance, etc. from around the world.

 

Kansas:

 

Mid-America All-Indian Center Museum, Wichita -- Preserves and exhibits the heritage of the Native American Tribes of North America. Includes exhibits of traditional artifacts, contemporary art and links to information about exhibits, the Gallery of Nations and the Native American Heritage Village.

 

Pawnee Indian Village -- Includes excavated Pawnee earth lodge and a walking trail dotted with the remains of the village including lodges, storage pits, plazas, and a fortification wall.

 

University of Kansas, Museum of Anthropology -- Collections include Native American beadwork and baskets.

 

Maine:

 

Abbe Museum -- Celebrating Maine's Native American Heritage. Discover 10,000 years of Indian culture, history and art through changing exhibits, hands-on programs and workshops taught by Native artists, at this award-winning trailside museum.

 

Maryland:

 

Accohannock Tribe Living Village -- The Accohannock Indian Tribe is building a Living Village on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Camping, canoeing and bird watching available.

 

Massachusetts:

 

Natick Historical Society and Museum, South Natick -- Includes archeological artifacts and historical documents.


Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University -- Anthropological information and artifacts from all over the world.

 

Michigan:

 

Museum of Anthropology, University of Michigan -- Anthropological and Archaeological information in eight divisions including Ethnology, Asia, North America, Great Lakes, Old World, New World, Physical, and Ethnobotany.

 

Ziibiwing Center -- Tells the story of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and the Great Lakes Anishinabek. Features details of collections, events, a research center, workshops, memberships, and guided tours. Located in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

 

Minnesota:

 

Le Seuer County Historical Society Museum, Elysian -- Contains large collection of Native American artifacts and craftwork.

 

Mille Lacs Indian Museum-- Exhibits dedicated to telling the story of the Band. Includes videos, computer interactives, listening stations and objects reveal information about the Band's life today, from how dance traditions are carried on to members' interests in music to sovereignty issues.

 

Mississippi:

 

Grand Village of the Natchez Indians -- The 128-acre village site features a museum, a reconstructed Natchez Indian house, and three ceremonial mounds.

 

Montana:

 

People's Center Museum and Gallery -- Presents oral histories and material culture from the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d'Orielle tribal history.

 

Nebraska:

 

Museum of the Fur Trade, Chadron -- Dedicated to the exhibition and preservation of the North American fur trade.

 

Nevada:

 

Steward Indian Museum, Carson City -- Located at the site of Stewart Indian School, a national boarding school, it includes artifacts, baskets, pottery, and exhibits of American Indian history and photographs by E.S. Curtis.

 

New Hampshire:

 

Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum, Warner -- Exhibits and programs about Native American life ways, culture, and artifacts.

 

New Jersey:

 

Montclair Art Museum, Montclair -- Collection of American art and Native American art and artifacts.

 

Powhatan Renape Nation's American Indian Heritage Museum, Rancocas -- Offers guided tours of exhibits including historical artifacts and contemporary art.

 

New Mexico:

 

Hubbard Museum of the American West, Ruidoso Downs -- Native American Collection includes stone artifacts, weapons, textiles, baskets, jewelry, beaded and quilled moccasins, dolls, kachinas, pottery from 1300 to the present, and more.

 

Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Albuquerque -- Information on the nineteen different Pueblos, their cultures, and their histories.

 

Institute of American Indian Arts Museum, Santa Fe -- The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum is home to the National Collection of Contemporary American Indian Art - and is the Nation's only cultural center featuring contemporary art by and about Native People.

 

Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico -- This museum has a special collection on the People of the Southwest that interprets 11,000 years of cultural history in the Southwest.

 

Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Laboratory of Anthropology Santa Fe -- A partnership between Native and non-Native people to provide information on ancestral, historic, and contemporary Native American arts and cultures.

 

Poeh Museum, Santa Fe -- Exhibits focus on six Tewa-speaking Pueblos of northern New Mexico.

 

Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, Santa Fe -- Exhibitions feature historic and contemporary Native American art and culture, with an emphasis on Southwestern tribes.

 

New York:

 

Noteworthy Indian Museum -- Mohawk Tribal museum located in Amsterdam, New York.

 

Iroquois Indian Museum -- Iroquois Indian Museum in upstate New York exhibits contemporary art and crafts of the Six Iroquois Nations. Exhibits also include local archaeology and Iroquois history. Annual Festivals, Children's hands-on Museum, 45 acre Nature Park.

 

North Carolina:

 

Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History Center -- A non-profit educational foundation created for the purpose of preserving Native American artifacts, art, and culture and located on Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

 

Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Cherokee -- Includes exhibition of artifacts, an art series, interactive programs and archives.

 

Museum of the Native American Resource Center, Pembroke -- Broad collection of intertribal artifacts, arts, and crafts.

 

North Dakota:

 

Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation, Washburn -- A nonprofit organization which manages and maintains Fort Mandan and the North Dakota Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.

 

Three Tribes Museum, New Town -- Offers displays relating to the history and early settlement of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Indians.

 

Oklahoma:

 

Ataloa Lodge Museum, Muskogee -- Ataloa Lodge Museum is American Indian founded, maintained, and operated. Small museum huge collection, over 20,000 items of American Indian culture. Located on the historic campus of Bacone College.

 

Cherokee National Museum, Tahlequah -- Houses the Cherokee National Archives, the official Archives of the Cherokee Nation, and library.

 

Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa -- Extensive exhibits on Native American cultures.

 

Philbrook Museum, Tulsa -- Exhibits on artwork of Native Americans.

 

Red Earth Museum, OK City -- Exhibits on cradleboards, historical artifacts, and contemporary and traditional art from Native American communities across the United States.

 

Oregon:

 

Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Salem -- Displays on Native American art and basketry.

 

Museum at Warm Springs Indian Reservation -- Museum in central Oregon dedicated to preserving, advancing and sharing the knowledge of the cultural, traditional and artistic heritage of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs offering educational exhibitions and programs that raise and inspire awareness of The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and other indigenous tribes.

 

Pennsylvania:

 

Lenni Lenape Historical Society and Museum of Indian Culture, Allentown -- Information on the Lenape Indians.

 

Pocono Indian Museum -- Features displays of artifacts, weapons, and tools used by the Delaware Indians.

 

South Dakota:

 

Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center -- Museum honoring the Lakota people as an outreach of St. Josephs Indian School and serving as a reminder of cultural importance and pride.

 

Sioux Indian Museum, Rapid City -- Part of the Journey Museum, devoting its exhibits to the past and present creative achievements of American Indian and Alaskan artists and crafts people, particularly those of the Lakota Nation.

 

Wounded Knee Museum -- Features narrative exhibits to tell the story of the Lakota Indian tribe and the Wounded Knee Massacre. Includes hours, admission rates, membership and directions. Located in Wall, South Dakota.

 

Tennessee:

 

Frank H. McClung Museum, Knoxville -- University of Tennessee museum featuring archeological research and exhibits.

 

Sequoyah Birthplace Museum, Vonore -- History and culture of the
Cherokees.

 

Virginia:

 

Loudoun Museum, Leesburg -- Chronicles county's history from the pre-contact Native American heritage through the present.

 

Washington:

 

Burke Museum, Seattle -- Displays of Northwest Coast art and life.

 

Makah Cultural and Research Center, Neah Bay -- Makah Tribal Museum.

 

Suquamish Museum, Suquamish -- Documents the heritage and culture of the Suquamish people with links to museum information, the museum gift shop, the tribal home page and the tribal archives.

 

Yakama Nation Cultural Heritage Center, Toppenish-- Offers exhibits on the history and art of the Plateau People. Site is one page with basic visitor information.

 

Yakima Valley Museum, Yakima -- Historical displays on Native American cultures.

 

Wisconsin:

 

Oneida Nation of Wisconsin Museum -- Museum near Green Bay dedicated to the cultural heritage of the People of the Standing Stone. Site includes information about Iroquois culture, museum exhibits, hours and education.

 

Wyoming:

 

Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody -- Exhibits on the Plains Indians.

 

Special Exhibits:

 

1492: An Ongoing Exhibit --Provides information on the period of first contact, Columbus' views of the indigenous people he met, the consequences of European settlement for indigenous people, and the ongoing history of contact between Europeans and Native Americans.
