Forts, Missions, and Rivers
H-Net Logo

Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History Project Collection located at The Newberry Library, Chicago.

This collection includes seven notebooks on Great Lakes tribes, however, the materials are not available for loan and the preliminary inventory list is not specific enough to identify exact materials for researchers to request a photocopy.  The collection appears to be a generally valuable resource and the library does offer short-term fellowship programs.  Fellowship information is available on the Newberry web page at http://www.newberry.org.]

Hannings, Bud.  Forts of the United States: An Historical Dictionary.  Jefferson, N.C.: McFarland & Company, 2006.

This large text offers a seemingly exhaustive listing of historic forts located in what is today the United States.  Listings are groups by present-day state and then alphabetically.  A helpful index makes quick reference easily.  The text contains historic paintings and lithographs but no maps.  Entries provide general locations but emphasize historic events that occurred at each post.

Hudson’s Bay Company Archives Online, Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Tourism
http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/resource/cart_rec/postmap/hbc_c.html

This website provides trade post listings and maps that cross-reference users to the Hudson’s Bay Company archives in Canada.  Most of the posts existed in the nineteenth century, though a few eighteenth century and even more twentieth century posts are also listed.  With relative ease users can locate forts on river maps and references to relevant documents, though the documents are not available online.

Losey, Elizabeth.  Let Them Be Remembered: The Story of the Fur Trade Forts. New York: Vantage Press, 1999.

This dense text discusses trade posts and forts in present-day Canada.  Three detailed maps illustrate locations in eastern, central, and western Canada.  The text includes detailed entries on each post/fort and the index makes locating each simple.

McEwan, Bonnie G.  The Spanish Missions of La Florida. Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 1993.

This interdisciplinary text examines all aspects of the Florida Missions and does include a few maps to locate the physical structures.

Ray, Arthur J.  Indians in the Fur Trade: their role as trappers, hunters, and middlemen in the lands southwest of Hudson Bay, 1660-1870.  Toronto; Buffalo: University of Toronto Press, 1974.

This text explores Canadian Indians’ place in the fur trade.  It is more focused on Indian strategies and trade systems than geography; however, it does include a small collection of maps, particularly before 1763.  These maps are less concerned with topography (particularly rivers) than with nations and trade routes.

Roberts, Robert B.  Encyclopedia of historic forts: the military, pioneer, and trading posts of the United States.  New York: Macmillan; London: Collier Macmillan, 1988.

This large encyclopedia lists French, Spanish, English, Dutch, and Swedish posts located in what is today the United States.  Forts are referenced first by their location in present-day states, and then alphabetically.  It does not contain any geographic maps but does offer some charts and illustrations of historic forts.  The text also offers a handy glossary of fort-related terms and an index.

Robertson, R.G.  Competitive Struggle: America's Western Fur Trading Posts, 1764-1865. Boise: Tamarack Books, 1999.

This text includes nine maps that transcend time and clearly identify the locations for major American posts in the following regions: Oregon Territory; Intermountain West; Central Montana; Northern Plains; Central Plains; Pierre, South Dakota Area; Council Bluffs Area; Southern Plains; Eastern Plains. It also includes helpful charts illustrating competing and merging fur companies.  Encyclopedic entries for each post, complimented by dozens of present-day photographs, constitute the bulk of the text.  The index makes it convenient to locate any fort discussed in the text.

Voorhis, Ernest.  Historic Forts and Trading Posts of the French Regime and of the English Fur Trading Companies, Ottawa, Department of the Interior, 1930.

This rare and older text offers encyclopedic entries on hundreds of pre-United States posts and forts created primarily by the French but also some English posts.   The text also includes portage and canoe routes, forts by region and travel route, trading companies, a sufficient bibliography, and a table listing 147 maps (though the maps are not included).  Unfortunately, the text does not include any maps, though fort locations are articulately described.
