Catherine O’Donnell Kaplan received her Ph.D. in American history from the University of Michigan.  She was an NEH postdoctoral fellow at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, College of William and Mary, before joining the faculty at Arizona State University.   Her work to date explores culture, politics, and literature in the early republic.  She is the author of Men of Letters in the Early Republic: Creating Forums of Citizenship, 1790-1812 (University of North Carolina Press, forthcoming 2008), as well as articles appearing in The Journal of the Early Republic and Early American Literature.  She is currently working on a study of Elizabeth Seton, John Carroll, and the development of Catholicism in the young American nation.

Teaching Interests and Courses

Professor Kaplan teaches undergraduate courses in early American history and participates in the Department’s core courses for graduate students

Professional Service Activities

Catherine Kaplan is an associate editor of Frontiers: A Journal of Women’s Studies, and has served as a referee for a wide variety of publications.  She has participated extensively in several Teaching American History grants, is a member of the Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board, and serves on a number of department and college committees.
