Incorporating GIS into the Undergraduate History Curriculum

The goal of this project is to develop model lesson plans, resources, and approaches for incorporating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into the undergraduate history curriculum. Initially funded by the Arizona State University Quality of Instruction Grant program (2004-2006), the project has continued with internal funding from the Department of History.

The first fruits of this project have included the following:

  • Completion of a lesson plan for upper level undergraduates entitled "Americans on the Move:  Geography and Society in the Post-World War II Period, 1950-2000" (used in a geography class and presently undergoing trials with Arizona State University history students)
  • Initial development of a lesson plan for upper level undergraduates on miscegenation laws and the Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia (1967) (in process)
  • Creation of a database of resources for teaching GIS in history
  • Acquisition of a small GIS and cartography library in the History Department (located in Professor Plotkin's office)
  • Participation in the establishment of a national network of university instructors involved in teaching history using GIS (among whom a smaller group is preparing a proposal for a book on the topic)
  • Involvement of Arizona State University School of Geographical Sciences and GIS specialists in the project, establishing relationships for future collaboration
  • Presentations on the project at the Social Science Historical Association meeting in November, 2005 (see attached presentations) and the American Historical Association meeting in January, 2007
  • Basic familiarity with GIS and cartographic principles achieved by project participants
