What types of degree programs are offered?

The school offers a B.A. and plans to offer a Master in Advanced Study (M.A.S) in the fall of 2009, pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents. A PhD and certificate in Global Studies are also under development.

 

What are some areas of interest that I might consider?

The tracks available in the 2007-08 catalog are:

 

  • Environment and Natural Resources
  • Governance, International Law and Institutions
  • Urban Systems
  • Violence, Conflict and Human Rights

In the 2008-09 catalog, there is a new track called Development.

Depending on which of the older official catalogs a student declares, Global Studies majors may also have tracks in:

  • Development
  • Migration, Borders and Identity, or
  • Area studies such as
    • African Studies
    • Asian Studies
    • Latin American Studies
    • Russian and East European Studies

 

What are my career opportunities upon graduation? Among the many possibilities are careers in multinational corporations, entrepreneurship, international or non-governmental organizations, the Foreign Service, diplomacy, and other US government agencies.

Q: Who is the academic advisor for current and prospective undergraduate students?

A: The School of Global Studies advisor under the College of Liberal Arts is Michael Corke, his contact is michael.corke@asu.edu. His office is located in West Hall, room 140. You can reach him by phone at 480-727-3118.

Q: When will the Masters and PhD be available?

A: Both programs are currently under development. At the moment both programs currently plan to be available in traditional format, i.e., not online.

Q: Where is the School of Global Studies Department located?

A: We are on the 1st floor of West Hall.

Q: Can I get a Minor and/or Certificate in Global Studies?

A: The minor has been approved by the Arizona Board of Regents and is now available. See our advisor for details. The certificate program is still in development. Check the website for progress.

Q: Is a foreign language required for a degree in Global Studies?

A: Yes, two years or the equivalent of 4 semesters is required under the guidelines of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for a Bachelor in Arts (BA). For further information regarding the guidelines please contact the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences directly.

Q: Can School of Global Studies courses be taken for Honors credit?

A: Yes, most courses are available for "footnote 18" credit. Please see your Honors advisor for further information.

Q: What is the SGS 484: Study Abroad/ Internship (6 credits)?

A: The Study Abroad/International Experience differs from traditional Study Abroad programs in that it requires students to select either a combination of academic and practical fieldwork or a straight practical internship in a setting that fosters a deeper understanding of the students� chosen track and is located outside of the United States. The SGS internship coordinator assists students in identifying the most conducive atmosphere for applying theoretical knowledge and experiencing practical applications of the students� academic course work in a global setting.
