Arizona State University, School of Global Studies (SGS) announces two tenure track Assistant Professor positions:

Climate Change and Global Institutions

Applicants should demonstrate exceptional potential for transdisciplinary research on the activities and impacts of globally engaged institutions with regard to climate change. They should have thorough knowledge of theories of the structures and operations of such institutions in complex social, political, cultural, and technical environments, and of the major aspects of climate policy. Applicants may focus on any of a range of substantive climate change issues, including governance challenges; international regimes; the role of non-state actors; adaptation strategies of actors and institutions, especially at the local and household levels; and mitigation strategies at all levels. Consistent with the SGS vision, applicants should consider links between global and local institutions, policies, actions and outcomes.

The appointee will develop courses on climate change and environmental governance for the SGS undergraduate Environment track, and collaborate with other relevant units at ASU, such as the School of Sustainability.

Required: At the time of appointment: a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field, such as political science, public policy, environmental policy, geography, environmental economics or sociology. Commitment to working in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Place Studies

Teaching and research interests will focus on place studies as they relate to issues of the quality of life in contested global spaces. We are seeking a candidate trained in the analysis of place as it relates to one or more of our central themes of Conflict, Violence, and Human Rights; Environment; Development; Governance and Institutions; and Urban Systems. We seek a candidate who can examine any of a range of place-based issues, from the role of place in the formation of identity to the spatial organization of human activity and culture.

The appointee will develop courses on place in one or more of SGS undergraduate curriculum tracks and collaborate with other relevant units at ASU.

Required: At the time of appointment: a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in geography; sociology; anthropology; environmental design, planning, or science; landscape studies; religious studies or related disciplines. Commitment to working in a multi-disciplinary environment and to collaborating with other schools and departments at ASU.

Desired: Geographical interest in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, or Europe.
