1. What is the composition requirement?
Eng
101(107) and Eng 102(108) or Eng 105 are required for graduation.
Students must earn a grade of "C" or better to fulfill the
graduation requirement.
2.
Can I test out of English 101 and 102?
No,
you can not test out of English 101 and 102. However, partial credit
can be earned by certain scores on Advanced Placement or
International Baccalaureate tests. These are:

Literature
and Composition Advanced Placement test: Students who earn scores
of 4 or 5 receive credit for English 101 and for English
204 -- Introduction to Contemporary Literature.

Language
and Composition Advanced Placement test: Students who earn scores
of 4 or 5 receive credit for English 101 and for English 114
-- English Grammar and Usage.
- International
Baccalaureate English exam: Students who earn scores of 5, 6, and
7 receive credit for English 101 and for English 204 -- Introduction
to Contemporary Literature.
- If credit
for English 101 is earned by one of these three tests, students may
complete their composition requirement by taking English 102H which
is the honors sections of English 102.

May I transfer credit from an Arizona public community college
or four year
university ?
Some
courses will transfer. Your placement and credit is determined in
accordance with the Course Equivalency Guide of the Arizona Commission
for Post secondary Education. This is an articulation agreement between
all Arizona public post secondary educational institutions which
governs all transfer of credit. The staff in the Composition Office,
LL 314, or your college advising office will determine your transfer
credit and placement by using the Course Equivalency Guide.
4. May I transfer credit from an out-of-state
or private college or university ?
Some
courses will transfer. Your placement and credit are determined after
you file an "Application
for Equivalency of First Year Composition Requirements." You
can file this form in the Composition Office,LL 314(click here for map),
or with your college advising office. The application must be accompanied
by a copy of the catalog description of the course(s) you want to
transfer and a copy of the transcript showing successful completion
of the course(s). Click

Please Note:

The
fact that the University Admissions Office has accepted the
credit hours for composition courses taken elsewhere does
not mean that those courses satisfy the ASU Composition requirement.

Exemptions
from composition requirements granted at other institutions
will not be accepted at Arizona State University.
