Writing for the Professions


Advanced interdisciplinary writing course emphasizing workplace and technical communication and editing appropriate to diverse professions. Practice and study of selected types of discourse employed in professional writing situations, preparing students for different systems of writing in their professional lives. Examples from the writing of workplace professionals are analyzed and used as models to demonstrate the transition from academic to professional writing. Throughout this course, students will:

  • significantly improve their professional writing;
  • develop an understanding of how members of a particular profession conceive of and engage in the rhetorical practices of that profession;
  • demonstrate understanding of the key conversations, the forms, and the conventions of writing in a particular professional discourse community;
  • gain experience in the construction of professional discursive practices within a profession and practice using its discourse;
  • read critically and analyze rhetorically writings from the professions and use those lenses to frame their own discourses;
  • write collaboratively and in the different forms and styles of a profession; and
  • develop techniques for conducting research on the Internet and with other electronic databases.
