To get space on the Web from ASU:
- Open Netscape.
- Go to http://www.asu.edu/asuweb/jukebox/webpages
- Click on the "Personal" web space choice for Step 1.
- At Step 2, go to the Self-Subscription website by clicking on "HERE"
in the second paragraph. You need to fill out the Self-Subscription
form in order to get the public server to recognize your AFS space (in
other words, in order to make your page accessible on the web).
This step can only be accomplished (at this time) by using a computer
at an IT-maintained site (i.e. the main floor of the Computing Commons).
- Click "Back" at the top left-hand side of the Netscape toolbar to
go back to the Step 2 page.
- Click on "Step 3" in the second paragraph.
- Fill out the request form in order to create a "WWW" space in your
ASU account.
- Click on "Activate My Space."
- In your ASU account, you now have a folder called "WWW." Any
file saved in this folder will be posted on your web site.
Within a
few minutes of completing both Steps 2 and 3 (usually no more than ten)
you will receive an e-mail message from the ASU webmaster that will tell
you that your ASU web space has been created. The message will contain
your Web Site Address (URL). Save this message, and write down your
URL. You now have a home on the web! If you send your URL
to Jacquie Lynch at Jacquie.Lynch@asu.edu,
she will link your webpage to the English Department's website.
Designing your homepage (index file):
- You will need to use a Netscape program that has an editor in order
to create a webpage without using HTML (either Netscape Gold or Netscape
Communicator are fine).
- Choose "File" on the top left-hand side of the toolbar.
- Choose "New" and "Blank Page" (You might want to play around with
the Netscape Templates and the Wizard later).
- You now have a blank document in front of you that works similarly
to a document in Microsoft Word or any other Windows based word processor.
Try typing a few lines that you think you would have on your webpage
(perhaps a title or the beginning of a course description).
- Save your document to a disk and title it "index.html" (Your homepage
should always be titled "index" so that the server knows which document
to recognize as your homepage).
Creating a Link
- Try creating a Link: type a keyword that you might include on your
webpage to link your page to another page (perhaps the ASU library http://www.lib.asu.edu
or the ASU homepage http://www.asu.edu). Highlight the keyword/s.
- On the top tool bar, choose the chain link icon, "Insert Link"
- Type the full URL (complete webpage address) and then hit "OK."
You've created a link!
Changing the Document's Appearance
- You can play with the colors of the background and text by going
to "Format" and choosing "Page Colors and Properties."
- Feel free to play around with other icons and commands to alter the
appearance and add other features to your document.
Posting your index file to your personal Web Page
- Once you have finished creating your document in Netscape, save "index.html"
to your disk.
- Go to "Start" at the bottom of the screen.
- Choose "Programs," then "Internet," then "Ftp," then "ftp."
- The File Transfer Wizard will automatically open on your screen.
Use the following directions for the Wizard:
A. At the first File Transfer Wizard screen, choose "Next."
B. At 02/13/2006 5:39 PM site or host," and then click "Next."
C. At the next screenFebruary 13, 2006 D. At the next screen, type "general.asu.edu" at the "Host:" prompt,
and then click "Next."
E. At the next screen, type your username and password for your
ASU account, and then click "Next."
F. Click "Finish."
- All of the files available to you on your computer will appear on
your screen. The left-hand side will show a tree diagram of the
files, and the right-hand side will show the files of the open folder
in icon form (similar to Windows Explorer).
- Double-click the "www" folder icon on the right to open it.
- Double-click "My Computer" on the left-hand side of the screen, and
then double-click "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)" on the left-hand side of the screen
to open your disk.
- There should be a file on your disk called "index.html" (that you
just created) on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Click on the "index.html" icon one time and drag it over to the left-hand
side of the screen. Drag it down to the "www" folder at the bottom
of the left-hand side of the screen.
- Once you have transferred the "index.html" file to your "www" folder,
you should see a script at the bottom of the screen that will say "Command
Successful." Now you should be able to visit your homepage on
the web!
If you need
to make a revision to your page, just open your index.html file in Netscape,
revise it, and re-send it to your ASU account using WS_FTP.
Links
to Teacher Pages
Several teachers
have offered their class webpages as resources to you as you work on developing
your own page. You might want to check them out for ideas for your
page-some of them even include sample assignments. Be sure to thank
them for letting us borrow their creativity!
