Pedagogies of Podcasting Workshop

What is a Podcast?

A podcast is simply an audio file (usually WMA, MP3 or MPEG 4) with an associated RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. The RSS feed allows people to sign up to automatically receive new podcasts from your site.

Steps in creating a simple podcast at ASU

  1. Record and edit a digital audio file (usually on your computer)
  2. Export the file as an .MP3 (using Audacity/Lame)
  3. Upload the audio file to your AFS WWW space (SSH or EMMA)
  4. Create a blog entry with a link to your file (ASU blogs automatically generate an RSS feed with each new entry).

Audacity:

  • How to record
  • How to do a basic edit
  • Normalizing tracks
  • Combining two files
  • Exporting as .MP3

SSH:

  • How to connect to your web space
  • How to upload a sound file

Blogs:

  • Create a new blog
  • Create an entry for your podcast (automatically creates an RSS feed)
  • To manually subscribe to an ASU blog, use the URL <BlogName>.blog.asu.edu/feed/
