The large color triangle represents the viewable color spectrum. The black triangle represents the colors that a Lumiled (an NEC SpectraView 2180WG-LED in this case) or high-end CRT monitor is capable of displaying. You will also notice that even the best monitor cannot display the entire viewable spectrum. The yellow triangle represents the colors that the Eizo L997 (one of the best traditional LCD panels) is capable of displaying. You can see that the traditional LCD simply cannot display the same depth or range of colors. Even the very good Apple cinema 23" display cannot display the depth of color that a good CRT or Lumiled monitor can display. You will notice that the Apple covers the blue and red colors fairly well, but leaves most of the greens out of its colorspace. You can make the best of what you have by profiling. Even with a traditional LCD or an inexpensive CRT, you can optimize your images by profiling.
