I am intrigued by epistemological and ontological questions; I like to explore, both in my teaching and in my research, how rhetoric and other social relationships create/inform/disguise/betray our sense of what is "real." For me, one of the most interesting sites of this interplay is the composition classroom, where students and teachers actively manipulate "reality" both in their texts and in their everyday interactions. As a teacher of composition, I strive to help students negotiate the stunning variety of rhetorical situations they encounter. My goal is both to challenge and to demystify, to excite and to soothe. I feel that Rhetoric and Composition is one of the most rewarding areas of study in the university, due to its multidisciplinarity and practicality (epistemological musings notwithstanding!), and I try to pass on this enthusiasm to my students. |
