photo of Randel HelmsI am interested in the influence of the Bible on Western literature. I teach an undergraduate course on the Bible as Literature (ENG 356), and have published on the use of the Bible in such authors as Milton, Blake, Wordsworth, and J.R.R. Tolkien. My work in the nineteen-seventies was largely on Tolkien. In the eighties and nineties I have written on the Gospels as works of literature (Gospel Fictions, 1988; Who Wrote the Gospels? 1997). I am presently at work on a study of the agonistic and intertextual relationships among various biblical authors, a book to be entitled The Bible Against Itself.
