I received a BA with an emphasis on Creative Writing from the University of Michigan where I was enrolled in a then-new program called the Residential College.  My graduation thesis was a book of short stories.  I received an MA from Arizona State University, and I wrote my thesis on the language of Virginia Woolf.  I received a PhD from Arizona State University where I studied rhetoric and writing.  My dissertation explored ideological views of usage, grammar, and style beginning with Aristotle.

My work at ASU focuses on excellence in undergraduate education, whether that means teaching new teachers how to manage first-year writing classes, administering undergraduate programs, or teaching theory and writing classes.  In particular, I am interested in non-academic genres of writing and meeting the needs of those students who wish to translate their English degrees into areas other than teaching.  Recently, I have taught Magazine Writing, Review Writing, and Rhetorical Studies to upper class students as well as Reflective Essay Writing to sophomores from around the campus.  Over the years, I have also taught Writing for the Professions, Academic Writing, and Persuasive Writing on Public Issues as well as ENG 101 and ENG 102.  I also serve as the Department of English Internship Coordinator and the Director of the Writing Certificate Program.

My writing interests focus on three main areas.  I am an active volunteer for the Partnership for a Drug-free America, work that has afforded me opportunities to write and speak about drug use among young people.  With my son, I am currently working on a book about the epidemic use of crystal methamphetamine in the United States.  Further, I am interested in marginalized labor groups in public universities, and my research in that area is an ongoing process. Last, I have partnered with other teachers to co-author various works on teaching first-year writing.

I serve as Chair of the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Full-Time Contract Faculty, and I am a member of the Commission on the Status of Women at ASU.  The CSW recognized me recently for Outstanding Contribution Towards Advancing the Status of Women at ASU.  In the past, I have received various teaching awards, including the Distinguished Teaching Award for Lecturers and the Department of English Graduate Students Association Mentor of the Year Award.

Last, but definitely not least, I am a passionate sports fan (Sun Devils, Wolverines, Suns, Diamondbacks).  To slake this passion, I have developed a Popular Culture course focusing on the culture and rhetoric of sports.  This course will be offered in Spring 2007.
