NICK IVINS MEMORIAL LITERATURE SCHOLARSHIP
Arizona State University Department of English
Created in 2004-05, the Nick Ivins Memorial Literature Scholarship was established in memory of Nick Ivins (BA, English Literature, 2004). Nick’s family—parents Ed and Jaki, and sister Hayley—created this legacy of an endowed scholarship to support deserving students who love literature and who, like Nick himself, especially love the modernist work of James Joyce, author of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. This award is reserved for undergraduate English Literature majors and is bestowed annually. Students apply for the scholarship during the spring semester, when the winner is announced, and funds are awarded for the following fall semester. The initial award was $200; the second award was $600, and the Department of English anticipates that subsequent scholarships will be at or above this level of support.
Interested students will submit a completed application package, which includes the following items:
1) an application cover page, to be downloaded below;
2) a personal narrative detailing reason/s for studying literature (not to exceed 300 words); and
3) a critical essay exploring any aspect of James Joyce’s short or long fiction (approximately 750-1,000 words).
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet or exceed the following criteria:
1) be senior English majors with a concentration in Literature, as defined by the ASU General Catalogue (87 or more completed semester hours), during the semester when the scholarship is received;
2) be a full-time student during the semester the scholarship is received;
3) have a 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA and a 3.0 GPA in the major, and
4) be an Arizona resident qualifying for resident tuition.
The 2009 deadline is March 31, 2009.
