Students admitted with regular status to a graduate degree program in the Department of English may apply for graduate teaching assistantships and associateships. Deadline for applications is February 1. The department also sponsors a number of research assistantships for which students may apply by expressing interest to the chair or to faculty members with whom they might wish to work.
Each year the department awards the Katharine C. Turner Dissertation Fellowship to a Ph.D. student. A similar award is also made available to a student in the MFA program.
Other departmental awards include the Marvin Fisher Book Award for international students, the George and Collice Portnoff Endowed Fellowship in Comparative Literature, the Carl C. Carlie Linguistics Fellowship, and the Wilfred Ferrell Memorial Fellowship.
The Committee on Graduate Awards and Scholarships and the various program admission committees act on applications for all scholarships and awards described above.
The Graduate Colelge also offers a sponsored scholarship: the Herman E. DeMund Memorial Scholarship, as described in the Graduate Catalog. Nominations are solicited from the faculty, and graduate students may also request that faculty members nominate them. Other awards for continuing students are the Graduate College Dissertation Fellowship and the Graduate College Completion Fellowship awards.
Visit the Graduate College website for more financial aid opportunities.
Grants for completion of the thesis, dissertation, or other research are available. Applications can be picked up from the Graduate Student Association, 3rd floor Memorial Union. (Applications are accepted early in the fall semester for the calendar year.)
Graduate students may also apply for travel grants from the Graduate College for the purpose of presenting papers at scholarly conferences or conducting research for the thesis or dissertation. The travel grant program is administered by the Graduate Col lege. See the English Department Graduate Program Coordinator for details.
Students should speak with the chair, the director of graduate studies, and the graduate program coordinator for further information on available scholarships tuition waivers, and financial aid. They should also visit the Scholarship Office in the Student Services Building and check the departmental graduate studies bulletin board for announcements about scholarships and other financial assistance, including opportunities for administrative employment.
