ADVISEMENT AND REGISTRATION

Students should consider the various program directors their chief source of advisement until such time as the supervisory committee (also referred to as the thesis or dissertation committee) has been formed, whereupon the committee chair will likely become the student's chief source of advice. The graduate coordinator (LL 543B) is also available to answer questions and is a valuable source of information and advice on procedures and deadlines. It is imperative, particularly for doctoral students, that the chair and supervisory committee be determined early in the program since decisions about an individual's program of study need to be made early and in consultation with the committee (for example, choice of foreign language and manner in which competence will be demonstrated).

Registration takes place shortly after the middle of each semester for the following semester. It is advisable for students to register during this period to guarantee classes. Online registration takes place at the beginning of each semester. When classes are full, overrides can be issued only by the course instructor and are not usually granted.

To register for special classes, such as reading and conference, research, thesis, or dissertation hours, secure the required Independent Study form(s) from the department office (LL 542) or website and get a signature from the professor who will be in charge of your work. When you return the form you will be granted clearance to register and given the appropriate line number.

It is your responsibility to initiate contact with your program director/advisor, the director of graduate studies, the graduate coordinator, or the chair of your committee when you have questions or when it is time in your program to file certain forms and meet deadlines. You should have a current copy of the Graduate Catalog and should be familiar with the "Calendar" pages. Each semester the Graduate College publishes a similar listing of deadlines and requirements in single sheet format. Get in the habit of obtaining one (available in Wilson Hall) or see those posted in the English Department.

Workshops are sponsored by the Graduate College (e.g., on thesis and dissertation preparation), and GSEA through the Department of English (e.g., on applying to graduate programs, graduate school survival strategies, conference participation, etc.) and you should take advantage of these opportunities. Announcements are posted on the various bulletin boards in the LL Building (especially the fifth floor) and through Graduate Scholars of English Association.

The English Department's graduate student e-mail distribution list is an important means of communication for notification about departmental matters, your progress in the program, program of study, as well as scholarship and job/career announcements. If you have not been receiving e-mails and would like to be added to this list, send an e-mail to sheila@asu.edu. Students must have an ASU-email account. It is imperative that you check your e-mail and mailbox for important announcements and/or official notifications about departmental matters and opportunities. If you are not a TA, your mailbox is located in the Graduate Student Lounge - LL 311. If you are a TA, your mailbox is in LL 314. It is assumed you are checking your mail and e-mail at least once each week.

Full-time enrollment for graduate students is nine credit hours. Teaching Assistants must be enrolled for a minimum of six hours and are considered full-time. For full-time summer enrollment a student must be enrolled in five hours in the first/second or combination of both semesters. Teaching Assistants who teach in the summer must be enrolled for at least one credit hour. See the TA/RA Handbook for more information http://www.asu.edu/graduate/TARAhandbook/index.html.
