ASU English Home > Undergraduate Advising > Undergraduate Handbook Welcome to the Department of English! We are one of the largest departments of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and one of the larger academic units of Arizona State University. This handbook is intended to answer many of the questions you may have about being an English major at ASU. Other guides that you will find useful include the ASU Schedule of Classes (fall and spring),ASU General Catalog, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Academic Advising Guide for Students, and the ASU Summer Sessions Bulletin. The goal of the ASU English department is to educate students liberally in language, literature, and history and to prepare students to read, write, and think critically so that they are equipped for a variety of career opportunities. Some English majors go on to acquire certification as high school teachers; some pursue the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with the aim of teaching at the college or university level; some attend law school or medical school; others enter M.B.A. programs with an eye toward a career in business; and many go into publishing, journalism, public relations, professional writing, banking...the possibilities are unlimited.
