Dan ShillingDAN SHILLING

A native Pennsylvanian, Dan taught high school in his home state after graduating from Penn State University. He moved to Arizona in 1980 and earned a PhD in English from Arizona State University. Dan joined the Arizona Humanities Council in 1984 as a program officer, and was named executive director in 1989, a position he stepped down from in 2003. A former Fellow of the Kettering Foundation, he has served on more than 40 boards and commissions, including the Arizona Tourism Alliance, Federation of State Humanities Councils, and Grand Canyon Association. Dan guided Arizona’s early research on cultural heritage tourism, eventually editing three publications and earning several awards, including the Arizona Office of Tourism “Person of the Year Award” and the Museum Association of Arizona “Distinguished Service Award.” In 2005 he received the ASU “Distinguished Alumnus Award” for his service to the state’s communities. He is currently directing a federally funded project on Civic Tourism, based at Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott. Dan also teaches a seminar at ASU on ecological literature, and he and a dozen other people throughout the West have formed the Community Heritage Group, a consulting business that helps cities and towns realize qualitative economic development through cultural and environmental enhancement.
