Placement Policy

After successfully completing SPA 202/204 or equivalent course, students can follow the sequence of Upper Division Spanish Language Courses: SPA 313, 314; 413, 412.

Students can take EITHER SPA 413 OR SPA 412 upon having successfully completed SPA 314/316 or equivalent course. The following order is recommended, although not required: SPA 413, SPA 412.

HERITAGE SPEAKERS

  • Students who speak Spanish at home should take the placement test. If they place at the 300 level, they should enroll in SPA 315 or SPA 316 (Spanish Composition & Conversation for Bilinguals) and not in SPA 313-314 (SPA 315 is the same level as SPA 313 and SPA 316 is the same level as SPA 314). They should follow the following sequence: SPA 315-316; 413-412.
  • Students who graduated from high school in a Spanish-speaking country, should not enroll in any Spanish language course lower than SPA 412 (Advanced Spanish Composition & Conversation) OR SPA 413 (Advanced Grammar). They may, however, take SPA 325 or any course in literature, culture or linguistics at the 400 level that does not have a pre-requisite.

If you are a heritage speaker you must take the on-line placement exam.
