The School of International Letters and Cultures offers Master of Arts Degrees in Spanish in two concentrations.
The M.A. in Spanish consists of 30 semester hours of 500-level graduate work with a SPA heading (24 hours of coursework and 6 hours of Thesis [SPA 599]) beyond the B.A. For specific course requirements, students should consult statements on their respective programs.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for the masters program are evaluated on the basis of the overall nature of the student’s B.A. preparation. Special attention is given to the grade point average in all undergraduate work, the junior‑senior average, and the average in the major. The Spanish Graduate Program requires a 3.5 overall grade point average (4.0 = A). Should an applicant's overall GPA be less than 3.5, a junior-senior average of 3.5 would be considered competitive. Admission to the Spanish Graduate Program requires the candidate to present a B.A. in Spanish or close equivalent from an accredited institution. Other factors which are taken into consideration for admission include the quality of previous educational background, whether or not the student has had the opportunity to study abroad, and, where necessary, the nature of the letters of recommendation assessing the student’s command of Spanish and potential for graduate work.
All applicants are expected to have an excellent functional command of Spanish, such that they may pursue courses in the program without linguistic difficulty.
Schedule of Milestones in the M.A. Program for Graduate Students
Semester 1: Establish contact with a preliminary Advisor / Chair.
Semester 2: Meet with the (Preliminary) Supervisory Committee.
Semester 3: Establish a Chair and Supervisory Committee.
Discussion of Period, Genre, Specialization, Language Reading Requirement.
Preparation of the Program of Study for approval by the Graduate College.
Semester 4: Course work completed.
Comprehensive Examination Presented.
Semester 5: M.A. Thesis (Portfolio in Linguistics) in Progress.
Semester 6: Completion of M.A. Thesis and Oral Defense.
