ASU Summer Program in Japan, May 17– June 24, 2006

The Arizona State University Summer Program in Japan will be held at Hiroshima Shudo University (HSU) in the city of Hiroshima . You will earn 5 credits in Japanese language and 2 credits in Japanese Religion and culture over a five week course while staying at a beautiful Seminar House on the HSU campus. You will also experience a weekend home stay. This summer program includes weekend trips to historical and cultural sites in and around Hiroshima . We will leave for Hiroshima International Airport via Narita ( Tokyo ) airport on May 17th and arrive at Hiroshima on May 18th. Instruction begins on May 19th and ends on June 23rd. Those who wish to take the second session of summer school at ASU will be able to come home in time.

Location

HSU's history goes back to 1725. Its spacious campus is situated on a hill in the northwest of Hiroshima, and a monorail or a bus provide rapid access to the center of the city. The Seminar House, which will serve as the participants' dormitory, was completed in March, 2003 atop a hill on the HSU campus. Hiroshima is a city of over one million people located next to the Seto Inland Sea National Park . It is also unique in having two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Itsukushima Shrine of Miyajima. The shrine is traditionally considered one of the three most scenic places in Japan.

Eligibility

This program is open to degree seeking undergraduate and graduate students who are motivated to study and willing to meet new people and experience different customs, foods, and ways of life. Prerequisites are two semesters of college level Japanese for JPN201; and four semesters of college level Japanese for JPN313. Applications with a $150 non-refundable deposit (to be applied to the program fee) are due on or before Friday, February 1st, 2006.

Academic Program

Participants who have completed two semesters of college level Japanese successfully will enroll in JPN201 and REL394. Participants who have completed four semesters of Japanese successfully will enroll in JPN313, JPN310 and REL 394. REL 394 can be applied as a related field to the ASU Asian Languages major.

REL 394 Japanese Religion and Culture (2 credits)

Each student will earn 7 credits total.

Living Accomodations

Students will stay at the Seminar House on the HSU campus, as well as experience a weekend home stay.

Cost of the Program

A program fee of $2,180 (subject to possible change) includes:housing, breakfast on weekdays at the HSU cafeteria, home stay, weekend travel fees, ASU Summer Session fees, and an International Student Identification Card (ISIC).

Not included: ASU tuition and fees for seven credit hours ($1291), textbooks and class materials, round trip airfare, visa fee, medical insurance (required), personal expenses, dinner, or meals on weekends.
