Welcome!

Welcome to the Arizona Association of Teachers of Japanese! As the incoming president of AATJ, I'm looking forward to working with Japanese teachers from across Arizona. As a relatively new teacher in Arizona, I know I will be encountering many new faces along with some already familiar to me. Among the familiar faces, I'm grateful for the assistance of Miko Foard, immediate past president. I had the opportunity to attend the Chicago ACTFL conference with Foard-sensei this fall, where she took the time to introduce me to many of the people who have been affiliated with AATJ in the past. I was impressed with her ability to network and form associations, as well as her dedication to AATJ - her work has undoubtedly served AATJ well during her tenure as president.

At the September AATJ meeting, Yukari Takahashi of Mesa Community College agreed to take on the task of newsletter editor. Chie Okubo of Northern Arizona University will continue as our AATJ treasurer.

As many of you are aware, 2005 is the Year of Languages. In conjunction with this, AATJ will hold the 16th Annual Arizona Japanese Speech Contest at the University of Arizona in April. I hope many of you will be able to attend or will have students participating.

Please check our calendar for more upcoming events, and, if you are organizing an event, please contact us. If you're not yet a member of AATJ, please consider joining us.

AATJ President

AATJ History

AATJ was founded in 1990 through the efforts of Dr. Laurel Rasplica Rodd, formerly of Arizona State University (currently at the University of Colorado, Boulder). AATJ is an affiliate of the Arizona Language Association, a statewide language organization and through AZLA, the Southwest Council of Language Teachers. We are also affiliated with the National Council of Japanese Language Teachers (NCJLT). Along with workshops and events organized by AATJ, our members also participate in seminars and conferences of the affiliated organizations.
