Welcome/Willkommen!

The mission of the German Studies Section is to provide skills training that will lead to advanced proficiency in the German language. The faculty is also committed to providing an in-depth cultural experience, often of an interdisciplinary nature, that will ground the student as well as members of the larger community outside academe in civilizations, values and philosophies different from his/her own. Students develop these essential language and intercultural communication skills with a view to entering careers in such fields as teaching, business and the government. The Section actively seeks a diverse student body as well as a diverse teaching and research faculty.

The German Studies Section is dedicated to educating undergraduate students in the four language skills (oral comprehension, speaking, reading, writing) and a broad range of cultural knowledge as well as in critical thinking skills; to training graduate students at the master’s level in the substance of language and culture as well as in the concepts and methods that will enable them to practice German at a high professional level as faculty members, teachers and government employees in a wide range of career paths; to encouraging and supporting high-quality research and teaching among the faculty in addition to an array of faculty activities in professional and public service areas; and to sustaining the mission of the section through a broad, supporting set of activities and services.
