Dr. Guerrero’s research focuses on relational, nonverbal, and emotional communication. She explores concepts and theories related to both the “dark” (jealousy, hurtful events, conflict, intimate partner violence) and “bright” sides (nonverbal intimacy, maintenance, forgiveness) of personal relationships. She has received several awards for her research, including the Gerald R. Miller Award for Early Career Achievement (granted by the International Association for Relationship Research) in 2001 and the Dickens Article Award (granted by the Western States Communication Association) in 1995 and 2001. She has also presented 12 “top papers” at professional conferences. Dr. Guerrero and her coauthors recently published two new editions of advanced textbooks, Close Encounters: Communication in Relationship; and The Nonverbal Communication Reader: Classic and Contemporary Readings, as well as a scholarly book on Nonverbal Communication in Close Relationships.
Dr. Guerrero is currently chair of the personnel committee for the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication. She is also on the school’s executive and doctoral admissions committees and she coordinates Com 110 (Introduction to Interpersonal Communication) and Com 310 (Relational Communication). At the undergraduate level, she regularly teaches Com 310 and Com 317 (Nonverbal Communication). At the graduate level, she teaches seminars on topics such as emotional communication, nonverbal communication, and the dark side of interpersonal communication, as well as courses on research methods and data analysis. Dr. Guerrero currently sits on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including Communication Monographs, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Human Communication Research, and Personal Relationships.
