Office of Scholarly Journals
Who We Are
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has established an office to coordinate and help produce faculty-edited scholarly journals. The office has five staff members and is directed by Victoria Hay, Ph.D., an experienced editor of scholarly books, research news, and commercial periodicals.
What We Can Do for You
Producing a periodical entails a great deal of time-consuming work, and fitting an endless series of deadlines into a busy academic schedule can be a challenge. The CLAS Office for Scholarly Journals assists editors in Liberal Arts and Sciences with editing and production of their scholarly journals. With three graduate assistants and a managing editor, we can advise you about or perform editorial work, help with certain clerical chores, take your journal through the various stages of print production, and assist you with Web publication.
The Office of Scholarly Journals is prepared to help you with editorial, production, and clerical tasks not performed by your journal’s organization or owner. For example, if your journal’s publisher asks you to acquire manuscripts, seek peer reviewers and oversee the refereeing process, and edit the articles your editorial board accepts, we can assist with managing peer review correspondence, with copy editing, and with proofreading. If your journal maintains a Web site but expects you to keep it up to date, we can assist you with the content of that site.
What We Can’t Do for You
At this time, we cannot take on tasks that your journal’s organization or owner already does. That is, if your publisher performs such jobs as design, layout, and preparation of camera-ready copy while you do the editorial work, we can help you only with editing and clerical tasks.
Nor can we help you with preparation of your own books or journal articles. The Office maintains a list of contract editors, indexers, and graphic designers, and we will be happy to refer you to someone qualified to assist you with individual projects.
Where to Find Us
Our offices are in the Social Sciences building, SS 224. If you’re already editing a journal or are thinking about bringing one to ASU, please feel welcome to drop by or call us at (480) 965-7404.
