The Center for Asian Research is pleased to announce the upcoming
public lecture by Dr. Richard Baum,
2007 Robert C. Staley Distinguished
Visiting Professor in East Asian Studies, to be held on Wednesday,
March 28, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. in the South Room of the University
Club.
About Dr. Richard Baum:
Professor Baum is Director of the Center for Chinese Studies
at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his
M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from University of California,
Berkeley and has been Professor of Political Science at UCLA
since 1968. He is author and editor of eight books and numerous
articles on Chinese politics. During his thirty-five years at
UCLA, he has held visiting scholar or professor appointments
at Beijing University (China), Meiji Gakuin University (Japan),
Chinese University of Hong Kong, Delhi University (India), Lund
University (Sweden), and Leiden University in the Netherlands.
He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Contemporary
China, The China Quarterly, China Information, Asian Survey,
and Communist and Post-Communist Studies.
Professor Baum’s
current work is centered on the impact of China’s post-Mao
reforms on local governance, globalization and political institutionalization
in post-reform China, and
US-China relations and the prospects for war and peace across
the Taiwan Strait.

Distinguished Visiting Professor in East Asian Studies is made
possible by the generosity of Robert C. Staley. Mr. Staley is
a friend of the ASU Center for Asian Research, a member of the
ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Advancement Council,
and an alumnus of the Asian Studies Program at Monmouth College.
Staley has been involved in business in China and other regions
of Asia throughout his career.

Robert
C. Staley Distinguished Visiting Professor in East Asian
Studies: Dr. Richard Baum will
participate in the Roundtable "How China Relates to
the World" with Dr. Sheldon Simon, ASU Department of
Political Science, Dr. Stephen Mackinnon, ASU Department
of History, and Dr. Paul Godwin, National War College (ret.).
The roundtable discussion will be held on Friday, March 30,
2007, at 4:00 PM in Coor 5536.
