Place: Chengdu is an ancient, fascinating city located between the heartland of Chinese civilization and the Tibetan plateau. From the relics of the Sanxing dui culture to the tall green mountains dotted with ancient Daoist and Buddhist temples, Chengdu and Sichuan have a long, rich history. It is also a place of scenic wonder, including the famous Jiuzhai gou, a place that has been called “The Yosemite of China” for its natural beauty. The program will include weekend excursions to the giant Buddha at Leshan, Mount Emei, and other local sites. Students are also free to travel on their own during the intersession break to explore China. Sichuan is famous for its tasty and spicy food, the earliest “regional” cuisine to be noted in China.

Program: The program will be under the direct supervision of faculty of the Chinese section of the School of International Letters and Cultures. Students will be able to earn ASU resident credit for a full year of Chinese language coursework. In addition to regularly scheduled class hours, students will meet with individual language tutors two hours per week for additional practice and for integration into Chengdu life.

Program costs: The cost is $1,650 plus regular ASU summer tuition for eight or ten credits. This includes all teaching materials, 160 hours of classroom instruction, individual tutorial sessions, housing, some weekend excursions, visits to local historical sites, and talks on Sichuan history, food, and customs. Students must pay for their Chinese visa, travel expenses to China and most meals during the program. Inexpensive dining options are readily available.

Housing: Students will be housed two to a room in the newest foreign student dormitory on campus. The dormitories have laundry service, cooking areas, and each room has a modern bathroom with shower. Pictures of the rooms can be found here.

Contact: Eric Leinen in ASU’s Center for Global Education Services at eric.leinen@asu.edu for more information and about the program deadline and application process.

Fellowship support: Arizona State University students can apply for summer fellowships from the Confucius Institute at the Center for Asian Research. These fellowships, awarded on a mix of need and merit, range from $1000 to $2000 for students who qualify. Applications:
